Katherine Butler

Katherine first discovered her passion for ceramics and porcelain while studying at Newcastle College in 2006. In 2008 she continued her studies within the glass and ceramic department at the University of Sunderland. She graduated with a Masters degree in 2011. Soon after graduating Katherine co-formed Cone10 with Robert Winter at The Biscuit Tin studios in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is Katherine’s intension to express feelings and emotion within her work which is open to individual interpretation. The balance between simplicity of form, complexity of technique and modern technology provides both a visual means of expression whilst intentionally provoking a viewer stimulus in relation to the form and layout of the work. The combination of architectural line and form draws the eye towards the detail held within the monument-like structures; this provides the hand built resilient porcelain forms with a clean crisp structural aesthetic. The delicate appearance of the work asks the viewer to enjoy the true beauty of porcelain and other materials whilst celebrating the combination of handmade and embracing the industrial technological production available to the contemporary ceramicist today.
