This is an open edition photographic print by Alastair Stockman entitled 'Teenage Dreams'.
The print captures the image of the celebrated local tribute to the late John Peel which has been described as ‘one of the most natural and positive murals in Belfast’. It was originally painted by local graffiti artists Ken Maze and Glen Black on the flyover at Belfast City East in 2004.
The illustrated lyrics, ‘Teenage dreams, so hard to beat’ came from the debut single, ‘Teenage Kicks’, written and released by the iconic Londonderry band The Undertones. The Teenage Kicks EP was originally played in 1979 by John Peel who famously gave the Undertones a chance on BBC Radio 1 before they had their own record deal. This gave massive national exposure to the band, before social media ever existed. The mural was photographed by Alastair, who was himself an avid Undertones fan and this now globally recognised image was created. He then presented individual prints of Teenage Dreams to the members of The Undertones along with their producer Terri Hooley.
In 2013 the mural was cover over by the department of Social development in favour of a new colour scheme as part of urban regeneration which caused an outcry from Undertones fans, local residents and media. Social media provided a contemporary platform for community groups in the area who combined forces to demand that the mural be reinstated. Terri Hooley added momentum to the campaign, their voices were heard at Stormont and ‘Teenage dreams’ was restored as part of a Community Arts Project in 2015.
The photograph is printed on high quality Fuji crystal photographic paper.
